Mixed Reality: Strengthen your resilience and improve reaction time with cutting-edge technology

Get immediate access to expert knowledge and work across locations in a universe that unites digital and physical objects. With Mixed Reality you increase the efficiency, minimize errors and reduce unnecessary waiting time and travelling expenses. NNIT can help you all the way from Proof of Concept to day-to-day operations.

Remote work and digital forms of collaboration have become the new normal at the modern workplace, and in many organizations, tools such as Microsoft Teams and OneDrive make up a large part of the digital foundation.

But despite the fact that virtual meetings and document sharing in the Cloud are easing the workload in many businesses, some are facing requirements that may seem difficult to fulfil without physical presence: breakdown on a production line, ad-hoc support on remote platforms such as wind turbines, oil rigs etc., logistical challenges, and the lack of insight in and access to secure production environments.

This is where Mixed Reality (MR) comes into the picture. Watch the video below and learn more.

What is Mixed Reality?

As indicated by the name, Mixed Reality is a combination of virtual and physical objects that coexist and interact with each other. The concept was invented by Microsoft with the launching of the first HoloLens in 2016. HoloLens are head-mounted glasses enabling you to see and use your physical surroundings while being presented with virtual holograms, information, and objects that you can move, tap on, and interact with.

MR is often confused with Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR). Where VR surrounds the user in a digital world through VR glasses, AR displays – just as MR – digital elements through the physical world on a smartphone or a tablet thereby limiting interaction with the digital objects. MR differs significantly from AR by its ability to interact with digital subjects in 3D as if they were physical objects.

The purpose of Mixed Reality is to enable your employees to work more efficiently and precisely by means of knowledge and digital objects that can guide and assist them while they have their hands free to perform the work.

Mixed Reality is most often used in the following situations:

Remote support: To get help from an expert who is able to see and interact with the same environment as the employee from a distance and thereby solve the problems as soon as they arise.

Auditing: Implementation of auditing and quality control from a distance where the auditor is able to inspect and interact with the physical environment from a distance.

Training: Step-by-step training sessions and guides that help the employees safely and efficiently through job assignments.

Why Mixed Reality?

In the last few years, where less travelling and limited physical contact for long periods of time have been the rule, the demand for Mixed Reality has accelerated significantly. In particular in production, life sciences, logistics, health, and other regulated sectors, the technology has proven to create great value.

Examples of the benefits of Mixed Reality are:

  • Increased competitiveness due to fast progress and implementation
  • Intelligent use and utilization of expert knowledge
  • Improved reaction time and resilience in dynamic environments
  • Correct performance of tasks – and thereby fewer errors
  • Problem solving, troubleshooting, and remote support on demand
  • Savings in relation to labor costs and traveling expenses
  • Less traveling and thereby less carbon emission
  • Sustainable and flexible procedures across time and place
  • Knowledge retention through digitization of knowledge of employees who change position or job.
